Event Description:
On September 18, 2012, from 7:45 a.m. to about 9:30 a.m., at the Ramada in Lewiston, the Central Maine Human Resources Association is hosting its monthly meeting for HR professionals. Rebecca Webber, a partner at the law firm of Linnell, Choate & Webber in Auburn, along with John Gause, Commission Counsel for the Maine Human Rights Commission, will present a program on how HR professionals can handle and respond to unsolicited information gained from interviews with job applicants. You don’t have to be designated “human resources” to attend. This program will help identify a number of areas that seem to crop up the most and that will help human resource staff and business folks reduce even further the risk of claims. If there are particular issues attendees would like to see addressed (issues as opposed to requests for legal advice on a particular matter), please send those in advance to rwebber@lcwlaw.com. For example, what do you do when the applicant tells you that: they are pregnant? they have a comp injury from a prior job? they can work with gays but not folks from Somali? they are going to need leave soon to serve on duty overseas? they have an allergy to all perfumes and any products with any perfumed scent to them? they were fired from their prior job for reporting harassment? they will need leave soon for transgendering surgery? they can’t work Saturdays because it is a day of rest? Sprinting out the door is not an option; coming to this seminar is! And what better way to learn about the Commission’s view than to hear from their own attorney? The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members and includes the program and breakfast. Attendees should sign up in advance.
