190 Middle Road, Sabattus, ME 04280 • www.sabattus.org
The Town of Sabattus was first incorporated on March 21, 1788, with the name of Webster. One major change occurred in March of 1840 when the town was split into 2 towns; one was Webster and the other Lisbon. The Town of Webster was changed to the Town of Sabattus on March 13, 1971. The name of Sabattis came from one of the chiefs of the Indians that had lived in the area before the settlers arrived. The spelling was changed from Sabattis to its current spelling. The Town of Sabattus has an original tavern building still standing, built in 1791. In 1910, a group formed a business called Sabattus Mineral Spring Water. The source of the water they sold was a clear stream flowing from the side of Sabattus Mountain.
