Monroe Building: 213-215 Lisbon

A Walking Tour of Downtown Lewiston, Maine

by William Karz, Bates College

Information provided by National Register.

Located at the southeast corner of Lisbon and Pine streets, the Monroe building is noted for its series of intersecting Gothic style pointed windows throughout its mansard roof. The windows on the third floor carry Romanesque arches, while the second floor arches are Italianate, a most imaginative mixture. Built in 1871 by the Monroe family, its main floor has been used for retail, while the second and third floor were used as offices for lawyers (a.k.a. the lawyer’s block.) The fourth floor or the lodge hall was the home of the Grand Army Republic who were a group of civil war veterans. The Maine State Grange held its first state convention here as well. Presently the fourth floor is not in use, but the building is occupied by a few artists, businessmen, and tenants. The building is currently owned by mortgage banker, Leighton Cooney. Cooney once ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.
